Wildlife
The waters around Juneau are some of the best places in Alaska to see humpback whales. Many of them spend the summer feeding in the channels and bays north of town, often within sight of the mountains and the icefield.
Humpbacks are seen around Juneau through the whole summer tour season, from spring into autumn. Tours run most often from May to September, when cruise ships are in port.
Most whale-watching boats leave from Auke Bay, a harbor about 12 miles north of downtown and a short drive from the glacier. Tours usually include a bus transfer from downtown or the cruise docks.
Federal rules in Alaska require boats to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales. Good operators follow the rules and turn off engines when whales are close, so the whales come to you.
