Glacier & wildlife sightseeing
- Visitor center, Photo Point and Nugget Falls
- Black bears at Steep Creek in salmon season
Wildlife
A raised boardwalk follows a small salmon stream beside the road to the visitor center. In late summer, black bears come down to fish, often just a few yards below the rail.
Sockeye salmon return to Steep Creek to spawn from about late July, followed later by coho. Black bears come to catch them, and the boardwalk lets you watch from a safe height. Beavers have dammed parts of the creek, and you may see their lodges and ponds.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Bears come and go through the day, so it is worth checking the creek more than once during your visit.
A telephoto lens helps, but bears are often close enough for a phone. Turn off your flash, and do not lean over the rail.

The best seat in the house
Big windows look straight across the lake to the glacier face. Inside are exhibits, a short film and rangers who can tell you where the bears were seen today.
Accessible path
The classic glacier photo
A short, paved path from the visitor center to a lakeshore viewpoint facing the glacier. Come early or late in the day to avoid the busiest cruise-ship hours.
Easy walk
A 377-foot waterfall beside the ice
A flat, easy walk of about two miles there and back from the visitor center ends on a gravel beach at the foot of the falls, with one of the best ground-level views of the glacier.
