Steep Creek

A raised boardwalk follows a small salmon stream beside the road to the visitor center. In late summer, black bears come down to fish, often just a few yards below the rail.

What you might see

Sockeye salmon return to Steep Creek to spawn from about late July, followed later by coho. Black bears come to catch them, and the boardwalk lets you watch from a safe height. Beavers have dammed parts of the creek, and you may see their lodges and ponds.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Bears come and go through the day, so it is worth checking the creek more than once during your visit.

Bear safety on the boardwalk

  • Stay on the boardwalk and follow rangers’ directions.
  • Keep your voice low and give bears room to move.
  • Never bring food or drink onto the boardwalk.
  • Parts of the trail close when bears are too close. Respect the closures.

Photography

A telephoto lens helps, but bears are often close enough for a phone. Turn off your flash, and do not lean over the rail.
